Prior to this Wendy had rung Neil and asked if he was up for a bike ride ? The last time we had a conversation like this we had ended up in New Zealand riding the Otago Rail Trail. So hesitatingly he agreed to continue the conversation and see what she was planning, Six weeks, Zurich to Budapest down the Danube ! sounds good to me, Just need to run it past Megan first.
Wendy & Jeremy had ridden extensively in France a few years earlier and there daily schedule appealed to me. Cycle each morning then find a camping area, buy a bottle of red and a baguette and some cheese and spend a relaxed afternoon contemplating the meaning of life.
However, shortly after agreeing to the trip Wendy read a book about kicking the alcohol habit and as a result gave up drinking for three months. She sent the book to Neil, but he was not quite so enthusiastic. Weeks before departure Neil saw a posting on Wendy's facebook saying how easy three months had been and she was now aiming for a year. Argh, sold a pup, guess I better practice for a few weeks before we head off.
The plan was to carry all our own gear and camp along the way. Four panniers each and the trusty Surley long haul truckers, we used all of the 32kg baggage allowance with bulging carry on bags. Weight limits were so tight that I had to leave my emergency jar of Peanut Butter in Brisbane.
