Arriving at Culloden we had a hearty breakfast, Wendy dressed for battle and we headed out to the Moor. Which was more than the poor buggers that supported BPC were afforded.
The story of the battle makes pretty gloomy reading for Scottish supporters. A war grounded on religion & royalty with little or nothing for the common man.
The scottish forces had marched all night across country to effect a surprise attck on the English which never eventuated.
They then had to hurry back to the original, poorly chosen, site for the pitched battle. As many as 30% were still aslep or scavenging food when the battle began. In an hour it was all over.
The farmhouse at left was a field hospital after the battle. The ground over which the Scottish needed to advance and a tower commemorating the Scottish dead.
The site is well worth the visit if only to empasise the futility of war and blind faith in stutting popinjays.
